Volunteers are an essential part of the delivery of care and services at The Glebe Centre. We are grateful to over 200 exceptional volunteers who enhance the lives of our residents, members and clients.  Volunteers contribute over 24,000 hours of their time each year. Volunteers work in a variety of meaningful and satisfying roles that supplement and enrich our programs and services.

Volunteer roots can be traced back to 1887 when the Ladies Auxiliary was formed. This has expanded to include diverse members of our local community, including students, family members, community members, corporations, staff and clients.

Glebe Centre volunteers participate in activities, services and programs throughout the week including evenings and weekends.  Training is provided for all volunteers especially for those volunteers participating in specialized programming such as Snoezelen, Music & Memory, Java Music Program and our Spiritual Care Friendly Visitors.  Our community support programs also provide opportunities for volunteers:  Medical Drivers, Luncheon Club Volunteers, Community Friendly Visitors are just a few of the opportunities available.

Members of our Board and Board Committees are all volunteers. Board members provide their expertise to assist us in setting out the policies that enable us to run The Glebe Centre - one of the most up-to-date and reputable Long-Term Care homes in the Ottawa area and a provider of quality Community Services.   Family members and residents will also support our home through volunteering.

Because a successful and rewarding volunteer experience depends on developing sound knowledge of our programs and good relationships, we have set a minimum commitment period of six months. Some special programs and student placements involve a minimum number of hours over an agreed-upon term.

Volunteering a few hours a week or month can make a big difference in our residents' or clients' lives. It also lends to the satisfaction and personal fulfillment that comes from helping others.

The Glebe Centre provides opportunities for many student placements. High school students can complete their Community Service hours here, and we have arrangements with various colleges for their PSW, RPN, RN and Social Worker students to work here during their Clinical Placements. Many students continue volunteering after completing their required hours.

How to volunteer
If you wish to volunteer, please print our Volunteer Application Form or come in and pick one up. Complete the form and contact Volunteer Services to arrange an interview. This will provide us an opportunity to get to know you, and give you more details of available opportunities.  During the interview process you will be given a letter that will allow for a free police check.  To ensure the safety and security of residents, members and clients, all volunteers must agree to provide a satisfactory Police Record Check and references.

  1. Special Events

The Glebe Centre prides itself in providing many activities and programs in both Long Term Care and Community Support.

Activities for Residents take place both inside The Glebe Centre (concerts, special events and church services) and outside (such as trips in the Glebe Centre van, Lady Mary).  Clients and members can enjoy a multitude of activities at Abbotsford House.

The Glebe Centre is committed to recognizing our wonderful volunteers every year during National Volunteer Week with a special volunteer recognition event.  Staff continue to recognize and thank our volunteers on a daily basis for their support in making The Glebe Centre an amazing environment for both residents and clients.
