It is the time of year to get back to pursuits of interest, connect with friends and continue to keep fit. September is a natural time of year for the renewal of those interests, pastimes and routines.

Abbotsford at the Glebe Centre has been providing programming for seniors for 51 years. This year we have added some evening programming into the mix.  We have an exercise class, choir, memoir writing and the already sold out ‘Happening on the Hill’ lecture series. Charlotte Roach joined our team as a student and is continuing with us this fall, to support evening programing and space rental.  Have a look on-line for this non-member specific programing for Adults 55+.  Evening programing is sure to grow and flourish with Charlotte.

Regular day programing for members continues at Abbotsford: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. We have new art classes with Ariel and Holly along with special art workshops with Megan, Yulia, Ariel and Holly.  Every day is an art day at Abbotsford.

If you aren’t already a member of Abbotsford, now might be the time. You get full access to member pricing for our programs, and can join specialty clubs such as ping pong, bridge, American and Chinese Mahjong, pool/snooker, art, Tai Chi and writing; just to name a few.

Membership runs from January to December, and is just $50 per person.  You can join as of July as a new member for $25. This annual fee gives you member rates and special offers. Drop by Abbotsford and check out our facilities and see our full list of activities. Or check us out online:  www.glebecentre.ca (Abbotsford Programming at the Glebe Centre, drop-down menu)

If you are interested in languages, we have a full slate of conversational French and Spanish classes and clubs.  We have a new offering in Conversational French which relies on music and poetry to get you speaking and thinking in French.

Our core programming revolves around fitness and fun.  We have a full slate of dance (Zumba, Belly Dance and Jazz) classes, Yoga, Pilates, and Meditation, as well as general fitness classes. Fitness classes vary according to level.  If you have physical challenges our instructors are all trained to work with you.  Alternative exercises are always offered and different levels including chair and/or mat work are always an option. Guage your own physical abilities and ask for advice when looking for the right level to start with. We work on cardio/strength training, balance and stretching. We have something for everyone.

Drop-in and see for yourself, now is a particularly good time of year to start up a new pastime.  We offer beginner level pottery, stained glass, Conversational Spanish, bridge and Tai Chi.  Take the plunge and try something new; there is no better time of year to do so than September!

Abbotsford (the old stone house across from Lansdowne Park) is located centrally in the Glebe.  People come to shop for books, jewelry, puzzles, cards, crafts and women’s clothing all year round.   We are open to the public, but we cater specifically to seniors. Abbotsford programs are affordable, fun and varied.

We encourage loitering, before and after classes. We like to see folks drop in and buy a coffee/tea and treats in our dining room.  You are also most welcome to join in the regular Wednesday ‘Speakers Series’ at 1 pm most weeks (just call-in advance to register).

Abbotsford is your Seniors Active Living Centre for Adults 55+.  It houses the community programs and services of The Glebe Centre Inc., a charitable, not-for-profit, organization which includes a 254-bed long term care home. Find out more about our services by dropping by 950 Bank Street (the old stone house) Mon- Fri 9-4 pm, telephoning 613-230-5730 or by checking out all of The Glebe Centre facilities, community programs and services on our website www.glebecentre.ca
